Both sections of the module are all analogue in design, and both can be used independently or they can be normalised together in series, so that a waveform can be twisted first and then distorted and wavefolded.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe wave twister can take (for example) a saw tooth waveform as an input and shape it, under manual or external voltage control, through to being a triangle waveform and on to being a ramp waveform, and produces a sound similar to pwm for sawtooths. It will also work with symetrical waveforms such as triangle and sine waves, again producing pwm like tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt can produce a wave twisting effect from most waveforms (with the exception of square waves), whether they are symmetrical or asymmetric. Under many conditions the transfer function is not perfect, so different harmonics may be generated too. The offset control allows a bias to be added to the incoming waveform, either to bias it correctly around zero or offset it for more distortion and harmonics. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe second part of the V-Shape module is a distortion unit, with selectable Soft or Hard Clipping, and the clipping amount can be varied either by a front panel control or an external control voltage with the \"Distort\" control. The distortion offset control adds or subtracts a bias voltage to the CV signal, to give an extended range of control. There is a variable Exponential CV input which is about 30% more sensitive than the 1v\/oct input, this allows some nice over modulation effects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have added Voltage Controlled Resonance (Emphasis) in addition to manual Emphasis control. This uses a vactrol as the control element. The fast vactrol used allows modulation speeds up into the audio range. The filter will of course self resonate and act as a sine wave oscillator too. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is also an overdrive facility which can be selected with an onboard jumper. There is a breakpoint based wavefolder on the input, with drive level that can be manually adjusted or voltage contolled. A wet\/dry mix control allows resonance waveshaping to be added from 0 to 100%.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese additions take the diode ladder filter core way beyond it’s original function, it becomes a harmonic filter module that can add harmonics and shape waveforms rather than simply filtering them. With four independant CV inputs very complex filtering and waveshaping sounds become possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e The AJH Synth Sonic XV filter core is based on the diode ladder filter from the original Musonics Sonic V synthesiser dating back to the early 1970's. This particular diode ladder filter was originally developed by Eugene Zumchak (a former Moog employee) as a \"work around\" of the original patent (held by Dr Bob Moog) for the transistor ladder filter - the diode ladder was considered sufficiently different that it did not infringe the patent at the time. The diode ladder filter has quite a different character to it's transistor ladder parent, largely because the individual filter poles are not fully buffered as they are in the transistor ladder variant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe diode ladder filter topology used in the Sonic V is rather different to the better known diode filters from EMS and Roland, as the frequency cutoff control voltage is actually summed with the audio signal before being added to the top of the diode ladder string.
