Following the success of System 1, we received many requests for a more conventional subtractive synth design (1 had a heavy focus on creative stereo sound). We believe ours sounds fantastic, but there are many great sounding filter modules available, so we wanted to do something new, and designed a filter that addresses traditional limitations and offers new possibilities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur VCF features a 'BOOST' control. In most ladder VCF designs, the lower frequencies get attenuated (i.e the bass is lost), when you dial up the resonance. BOOST restores the low frequencies, boosting them at high resonance settings, allowing you to play extreme squealing basslines that are still... basslines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFurthermore, our Discrete Core Ladder VCF features four separate buffered outputs for 6dB, 12dB, 18dB, and 24dB\/octave sloped filters. This offers many many advantages over a simple switch selecting one slope setting or another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach of the outputs taps consecutively into the signal path as it is progressively filtered, and all of them can be routed and used separately... and simultaneously. Things get interesting then, because each stage is phase shifted by 90° from the previous. This offers very creative possibilities for combining these signals, as when you combine phase-shifted signals, some frequencies are cancelled. When combining them using a mixer that allows you to invert the waveforms of some of these, you can create fascinating bandpass filters, and everything in between low- and high-pass filters. It is similar to Oberheim's Expander Filter, but with its own unique character, since our filter is modelled on a\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/td\u003e\n\u003ctd style=\"width: 50%;\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have not limited ourselves to features, of course: Signal path is key to making a filter sound fantastic. A fully discrete, low noise, low distortion audio path is used throughout the circuitry. And we designed it to saturate at exactly the point our experience has taught us responds best, and works well with other modules. When approaching 8V PP (Peak-to-Peak), the filter will create an awesome creamy and compressed sound that bends and evolves ever more as you push the input signal harder. This sub oscillator is, to the best of our knowledge, unique, as it′s not a separate oscillator, but rather a frequency divider (always one octave down).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis approach has a few excellent consequences. First, it means the sub oscillator is always in phase. Next, it means that it can supply all the same waveforms as the regular oscillator, not just the simple pulse you are used to in a conventional sub oscillator. Finally, it can be modulated in exactly the same way as the main waveform (not separately, of course, although the sub oscillators can be processed individually).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMix and match 10 simultaneous waveforms\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere′s much more to it than that, though: separate outputs provide simultaneous access to all the resulting waveforms – saw, inverted saw, PW rectangle, triangle, and sine – for both the oscillator and sub oscillator. In conventional designs, the beating will speed up or slow down according to pitch, but in our design the beating remains the same, even when playing the sound across many octaves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn other words, this direct relation between the linear detune and VCO response makes it possible to have the same beating frequency at every pitch, for a uniquely atmospheric, rich, and alive sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoreover, if you play the VCO in LFO mode, the module enables control of the speed in the same way as in VCO mode, even allowing very long lasting sweeps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother strong feature is the huge range of syncing capabilities: adjust the sync amount manually, or use CV to glide from no sync to sync, surfing through variable degrees of soft to hard sync.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe core can sync to all repeatable waveforms that approximately exceed 1 VPP, and you can choose between falling and rising edge sync, to hold the proper phase relationship between the syncing and the synced wave or generate phase offset of 180 degrees.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor more percussive and bass patches, the Gate input can be used to reset the VCO core at the beginning of every note, ensuring every attack sounds equal and systematic at each time the notes are played. For example, you can also modulate both the oscillator and sub oscillator rectangle wave pulse widths through their separate PWM inputs and controls. Early Model D’s fitted with this VCO card are the most highly prized of all Model D’s, and currently sport asking prices of up to US $15,000. Many Model D enthusiasts regard this as the sweetest sounding and fattest of the three VCO, however it was quickly discontinued and replaced with the 3046 design because the temperature stability was terrible and customers complained that it would not stay in tune! This was caused by a design problem in the CV summing amplifier circuitry, it was not fully temperature compensated and the pitch would drift due to heat from the power supply or changes in ambient conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo address the original temperature stability issue we have redesigned the Control Voltage summing amplifier front end of the VCO and upgraded it by using precision op-amps and voltage references which were unavailable back in the day when this oscillator was designed. This successfully addresses the temperature stability problem and the good news is that the modifications which we have made are to the voltage control element of the VCO only, we did not need to make any changes to the audio and wave shaping parts of the circuitry, so the resulting sounds and waveforms remain unchanged. The audio circuitry is still identical to the original and retains the PNP current source and PFET transistor voltage follower along with the fast switch dual transistor Schmidt trigger core, so that it retains all of the sonic characteristics of the original design. This is a very useful feature, as our MiniMod VCO’s will respond to negative control voltages and produce correspondingly low frequencies; so it is now possible to glide down quickly or slowly to crazy sub bass levels!
