It functions as both an encoder (LR to MS) and a decoder (MS to LR), effectively creating a send-and-return loop for the center and stereo-edge components of your sound. This allows for advanced techniques like filtering the sides of a reverb for clarity or adding distortion only to the mono "mid" signal for extra punch. Because the module is fully DC-coupled, it doubles as a powerful CV utility, capable of deriving sum and difference voltages from simple envelopes and LFOs to create intricate, evolving modulation.
