The Klavis CalTrans is a 6HP Eurorack module that calibrates and transposes Volt/Octave pitch voltages on four independent channels. It is built for modular players working with tonal material who deal with VCOs that track poorly, pitch responses that drift from 1V/Oct, a narrow usable octave range or awkward transposition across several voices.
-
Four V/Oct channels with per-channel curve correction and range expansion for VCOs, VCFs or any circuit that oscillates under pitch CV
-
Neutral mode passes CV 1:1 for oscillators that already track well, keeping transpose, quantize, portamento and glissando available
-
Per-channel pitch tools: switchable semitone quantizer, adjustable portamento and adjustable glissando
-
Separate octave and semitone transpose on detented push-encoders with metal shafts, applied to any combination of channels
-
Four user presets stored separately from calibration data, with settings and calibration retained at power-off
-
Cascading inputs: an unpatched input takes its signal from the one before it, with no added load
CalTrans works as a relative tuner rather than an absolute one. It makes semitone and octave steps even across a range of up to 10 octaves, while you still set each oscillator to the right note with the transpose encoders and fine-tune it against a reference with the VCO's own tuning control. Each channel holds one calibration profile, so a VCO calibrated in V/Oct mode should stay on its channel; channels in Neutral mode can be swapped freely. It can also handle other pitch scaling systems, such as Buchla.
When several oscillators are transposed together and one cannot reach high or low enough to follow the lead channel, CalTrans moves it to its highest or lowest available octave so the chord or harmony stays intact. Portamento follows the exponential curve of analog circuits, while glissando steps through every semitone between two notes. Combining them can approach a linear glide, and setting both short produces an unusual grainy portamento.
The V/Oct inputs are factory calibrated, and their input scaling can be adjusted to compensate for inaccurate sources such as MIDI-to-CV interfaces. Firmware updates are loaded by playing an audio file into the calibration input. The module is compact enough for skiffs and comes with a choice of silver or black panels.
