Overview

Filtopia is an analogue monophonic synthesizer from UK maker Analogue Solutions, built around five analogue multi-mode filters running in parallel and with stereo outputs. It is aimed at players who want multi-band filter sweeps and vowel-like formant tones that a single-filter mono synth cannot produce. It is a limited edition of 200 units.

  • Five parallel 12 dB/octave filters: heavily based on the Oberheim SEM filter and developed further by Analogue Solutions
  • Three VCOs: each can be routed to one or several filters from the front panel, with PWM, sync and cross-modulation, plus two sub-oscillators and a noise generator
  • Modulation: three full ADSR envelopes, two LFOs and an 8-step CV sequencer
  • Two VCAs: the second has an echo with time, feedback and level controls
  • Built-in MIDI to CV with 5-pin MIDI In and Thru, plus an external audio input

The filter bank is the core of the instrument. Filter 1 uses a balance control to fade between low pass and high pass, filters 2, 3 and 4 are band pass, and filter 5 switches between low pass and band pass. Each filter has its own resonance and level control and its own modulation routings from EG 1, LFO 1, LFO 2 and the sequencer. Filters 1 and 5 have cutoff controls, while filters 2 to 4 use offset controls.

Spreading the filter cutoffs apart and turning up the resonance gives the vocal, formant-style character the synth is designed for, mimicking how the human voice shapes sound. The 8-step sequencer can animate the filters for moving, rhythmic timbres, and front-panel patch points open up further modulation routing. A small mixer sits before the filters to balance the oscillators and noise.

The main VCA can be driven by EG 3, by MIDI gate or set to thru, and the stereo MAIN and AUX outputs make it straightforward to spread the filter bank across a mix. The audio input lets you run external signals through the filters as well.
