This is the DIY kit version of the Befaco Chopping Kinky, an 8 HP Eurorack module with two voltage-controlled wavefolders. It is aimed at modular users who build their own modules and want harmonic shaping for audio plus a way to bend control voltages.
-
Two different folding circuits: each channel folds the waveform in its own way, giving two distinct timbres from one module.
-
Dual CV control of fold amount: each channel has one CV input through an attenuverter and a second that goes straight to the internal VCAs.
-
DC-coupled inputs: fold audio to add harmonics, or reshape LFOs and envelopes as CV.
-
Chop output: switches between channels A and B using a zero-cross detector or an external gate.
-
Complete kit: all parts for a finished module, plus a power cable and two Befaco Knurlies M3 rack screws.
Wavefolding raises the signal level until it reaches saturation, then folds it back on itself instead of clipping it. The result is a brighter, more complex waveform. A filter removes harmonics; a wavefolder adds them, so the Chop pairs well with simple sine or triangle sources. Because each channel has a manual shape control, an attenuverted CV input and a direct CV input, you can set a base fold amount and then modulate it from two sources at once.
The Chop output adds a further option. With nothing patched to its gate input, a zero-crossing detector compares channel A and selects A or B automatically, which creates hard switching between the two folded signals. Patch a gate and the switching follows your rhythm instead. Channels A and B also have their own separate outputs.
Befaco rates the build as medium difficulty. An assembly manual, schematic, BOM and an interactive build guide are available. The front panel is heat-treated aluminium, and the module is designed in Barcelona.
