The Befaco CV Thing is a 6HP Eurorack module that converts control voltages into MIDI. Befaco designed it as a smaller version of its VCMC for compact performance cases. It lets a modular system control MIDI hardware, a DAW, soft synths or environments such as Max/MSP from CV and gate signals.
-
8 CV inputs: each input accepts CV or gate signals and can be mapped to any MIDI message.
-
Flexible MIDI output: notes, CC, NRPN, Program Change, clock and start/stop, with V/Oct converted to MIDI notes.
-
USB and TRS MIDI: class-compliant USB MIDI plus a TRS MIDI jack, with a TRS to DIN5 Type A adaptor included.
-
OLED screen and encoder: the display shows input channels, CV levels and MIDI routing, all set from one master encoder.
-
Stored settings: configurations are kept in internal memory and can also be saved via SysEx.
Compared with the VCMC, the CV Thing has no sliders or buttons. It focuses on turning modular voltages into MIDI data in a narrow footprint. A typical use is sequencing an external synth from Eurorack gates and pitch CV. You can also send LFOs and envelopes out as CC or NRPN to automate parameters on hardware or in software, or drive MIDI clock and transport from a modular clock source.
Setup can be done on the module itself or with Befaco's web editor. The firmware is shared with the VCMC and is published openly on GitHub. The module has a heat-treated aluminium front panel and is assembled in Barcelona. At 25mm deep including the power connector, it fits shallow cases.
