The Befaco Sampling Modulator DIY Kit is the self-build version of Befaco's 8 HP Eurorack module, which sits somewhere between a VCO, a sample & hold and an 8-step trigger sequencer. It suits Eurorack users who are comfortable soldering and like experimental, lo-fi and aliased sampling sounds.
-
Five uses in one module: sequencer-clocked sample & hold, analog down-sampling effect, sampling modulator/shaper, 8-step trigger sequencer and V/Oct VCO
-
Wide clock range: up to 25 kHz on its own and up to 200 kHz with CV applied at the input
-
Flexible clock input: normal clocking or positive-going hard sync for shuffle and polyrhythmic patterns
-
HOLD input for keeping selected notes in place
-
Temperature-compensated ramp-core VCO tracking over more than 4 octaves
-
Complete kit: all parts for a finished module, plus a power cable and two Befaco Knurlies M3 rack screws
As a sample & hold, the module behaves as expected, but because the internal sequencer clocks it, the resulting patterns go beyond the usual random S&H melodies. Turning steps on and off changes which samples get taken, and the HOLD input lets you freeze chosen notes.
Push the clock into audio rate and it becomes a down-sampler, covering everything from harsh sample-rate reduction to an almost clean signal. In sampling modulator mode the clock follows V/Oct: feed a simple waveform such as a sine into IN and send the same pitch CV to both the external VCO and the module's CV input. The related frequencies and the resulting aliasing produce metallic, clangorous tones and 8-bit textures, and because both oscillators stay in sync, the timbre holds steady across the keyboard. Befaco calls this frequency-related sampling-rate modulation. Switching sequencer steps breaks the waveform up further, at times sounding like several oscillators in unison.
The trigger outputs can also be used as a pulse VCO, with the step switches shaping its timbre. The front panel is heat-treated aluminium, and the module is designed in Barcelona, where the kits are prepared.
