The Befaco VCMC is a 20 HP Eurorack module that works as a voltage-controlled MIDI controller. It is for modular users who want to drive external synths, a DAW or software instruments from the rack. It converts CV, gates and V/Oct pitch into MIDI, and its eight faders and eight push buttons also work as a regular MIDI control surface.
-
Eight faders and eight buttons, each with its own CV or gate input for external automation
-
10 CV inputs and 8 gate inputs, including two auxiliary CV inputs (Aux A and Aux B)
-
Class-compliant USB MIDI and DIN-5 MIDI outputs
-
Flexible mapping to CC, 14-bit CC, NRPN, notes, program change, channel pressure, clock and start/stop
-
V/Oct-to-MIDI note conversion with polyphonic mode, chord mode and scale quantising
-
OLED screen and rotary encoder for editing, plus four internal memory slots
Each CV input sends a MIDI value that follows the incoming voltage. It can run on its own, or be paired with its fader so the fader either adds to the CV or acts as an attenuator on it. Pair a CV input with its gate input and the VCMC turns V/Oct pitch into MIDI notes. You can set each CV input to 0–10 V, 0–5 V or -5/+5 V and calibrate it individually, so it handles unipolar envelopes and bipolar LFOs alike.
The note features go beyond simple pitch conversion. Chord mode lets you choose chord type, voicing and presets, and adds strum and humanize settings. Quantising can follow Lydian, Major/Ionian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Minor or Phrygian scales, and velocity can be set per note. The gates can also trigger a MIDI panic function.
Configurations are stored in internal memory and can be backed up via SysEx. Befaco also offers an online web editor and publishes the firmware on GitHub. The front panel is heat-treated aluminium, and the module is designed and assembled in Barcelona.
