The Klavis Twin Waves MKII is a digital Eurorack module with two oscillator sections in 8HP. Each section can run as a VCO, an LFO or a random generator, so it can serve as a pair of sound sources, a pair of modulators, or one of each. With cross-modulation between the two halves it also works as a compact complex oscillator, and its shallow build suits skiffs and small cases.
-
Two independent sections: set each one to VCO, LFO or random mode
-
VCO engine: V/Oct tracking over 10 octaves, linear FM, Klavis's own BZXFM through-zero FM, hard and soft sync, VCA and a scale quantizer
-
Synthesis algorithms: wave shaping, phase modulation, stacked unison oscillators, additive synthesis, bit reduction, ring modulation and filtered noise
-
LFO engine: signal and cycle trigger outputs at once, external wave sync, and clocked rates with CV-controlled multiply and divide
-
MKII additions: three gain knobs for the modulation inputs, cross-patching between sections and a thinner single-PCB design
In VCO mode the algorithm can be chosen by CV. Options include phase positioning of multiple waves, up to five stacked oscillators in tunable unison, self-sync against a phantom oscillator, seven-wave additive synthesis, and a ring modulator with its own second oscillator. Noise can be passed through a low-pass, band-pass or resonant filter. Oscillator 1 adds a sub-octave square output and an extra input that can be assigned to FM, VCA, quantizer base note or algorithm selection. Klavis notes that BZXFM behaves differently from standard through-zero FM and needs a different approach to modulation.
In LFO mode the wave engine covers wave shaping, phase modulation, random levels and vectors including Brownian motion, and randomly spaced triggers and waves. Output level is set by knob and CV.
Both sections share one set of controls. An Osc2 button picks the section you are editing, and an LED beside each knob shows when it has reached the stored value. The knob only takes over from that point, so values do not jump. A display with context icons and short help text supports editing, and settings are restored after power-up. Internal normalling links the two sections: Osc 2 feeds Param 1, Osc 1 feeds Param 2, and the Osc 1 square output feeds Sync/Clk. This gives cross-modulation with no cables patched, and plugging into an input overrides the link. Firmware is updated by playing an audio file into the panel. The module comes with a silver or a black panel.
