The Solid State Logic ALPHA 8 is a 1U rackmount converter with 8 line inputs and 8 line outputs. It adds analogue I/O to an existing audio interface over ADAT and S/PDIF, and it can also work on its own as a USB-C audio interface. It suits producers and engineers working with outboard processors, synths, drum machines, samplers, analogue mixers and 500-series modules.
-
8 x 8 line-level conversion: balanced TRS inputs and outputs with 32-bit converters running at up to 192 kHz.
-
Selectable operating levels: each input and output can be set to +24, +20, +18 or +9 dBu.
-
DC-coupled outputs: the outputs can send control voltage to synths, modular systems and CV-enabled effects.
-
Digital expansion: two optical ports and one S/PDIF port carry 8 ADAT and 2 S/PDIF channels, with flexible routing between analogue, ADAT and S/PDIF.
-
Standalone USB mode: works as an 18-in/18-out interface on macOS (class-compliant) and Windows (SSL ASIO/WDM driver).
-
Studio clocking: BNC wordclock in and out with a 75 Ω termination switch, plus sync to ADAT or S/PDIF.
SSL designed the ALPHA 8 as a companion to the SSL 18 interface. One unit adds 8 channels over ADAT, and two units add 16. It also connects to any other interface with ADAT inputs. Each output can take a mix of analogue, digital and USB sources, so the unit can handle hardware inserts for EQs, compressors and effects. It can also send S/PDIF to external meters or amp simulators, or serve as the main interface for a compact setup.
The ALPHA 8 has no mic preamps; it is a line-level device. For modular users, SSL's free CV Tools pack for Ableton Live uses the DC-coupled outputs, and oscillator calibration works with oscillators tracking bipolar ±5 V at 1V/oct. Eurorack signals should be brought down to line level before they reach the inputs.
The front panel has separate input and output meters and a headphone output that can monitor any single input or output, or a stereo pair. The headphone output offers Standard, High Impedance and High Sensitivity modes. The unit comes with the SSL Production Pack software bundle.
