The Solid State Logic SSL 18 is a 26-in/28-out USB-C audio interface for Mac and Windows, designed for rackmount studio use. It is aimed at recording, production and mixing setups that bring professional outboard gear into the signal path, with +24 dBu inputs and outputs to match.
-
Eight SSL mic preamps on XLR-1/4" combo jacks with 67 dB of gain, an EIN of -130.5 dBu (A-weighted), 48V phantom power, polarity invert and a high-pass filter per channel
-
Legacy 4K analogue enhancement on every analogue input, adding harmonic distortion and a high-frequency EQ lift inspired by the SSL 4000-series console
-
Ten balanced line outputs rated at 125 dB dynamic range, all DC-coupled so they can send control voltage to synthesizers and modular systems
-
Two independent headphone outputs with Standard, High Sensitivity and High Impedance modes, also usable as extra line outputs
-
Expandable digital I/O with two ADAT ports, S/PDIF (coaxial or optical), word clock out and MIDI I/O on 3.5 mm TRS
-
Front-panel monitor control with customisable Cut, Alt and Talk buttons and a talkback input processed by the analogue Listen Mic Compressor
Each input can be switched between mic and line. In line mode the preamp stage is bypassed entirely, so external preamps and channel strips can feed the converters directly. Inputs 1 and 2 sit on the front panel, accept instruments at Hi-Z, and offer configurable analogue insert points for patching in compressors or EQ while tracking.
Monitoring is built around the hardware controller and the SSL 18 Mixer in SSL 360°. The software mixer runs at low latency and handles the control room mix plus four further monitor mixes for headphones A and B and line outputs 3-4, in stereo or dual mono. Custom Monitor Control Assignment lets you decide which of the ten analogue outputs (and the S/PDIF output) follow the monitor level, which is useful for surround and immersive speaker setups. Mirror Routing, input metering and savable profiles help with recalling sessions.
The talkback input works in mic or line mode, and the line option means stems can be run through the Listen Mic Compressor for a characteristic aggressive squash. For larger sessions, additional SSL 18 units can be configured as ADAT preamp expanders, giving up to 24 mic preamps in total.
Conversion runs at up to 32-bit/192 kHz over USB 2.0 Type-C. The interface is class-compliant on macOS 13 and later, while Windows 10 and 11 use the supplied ASIO/WDM driver. Both USB-C to C and USB-C to A cables are included.
