| The Universal Audio Volt 1 Gen 2 is a compact, bus-powered USB-C audio interface with two inputs and two outputs, built around a single Tone Shaping mic/line preamp. It is aimed at singer-songwriters and content creators who record one microphone at a time, either alone or together with a guitar or bass. This second-generation Volt 1 adds 32-bit/192 kHz conversion, and three Tone modes replace the single Vintage preamp mode of the original.
The TONE button steps through Off and the three voicings, each shown by its own LED colour. Warmth is modelled on the tube character of the UA 610, Focus gives a punchy solid-state sound in the style of classic American consoles and suits drums, guitar and bass, and Shine adds a British Class-A colour with a smooth top end. Each mode also applies an EQ curve derived from analog hardware, and tones can be selected from the UAD Console app as well as the front panel. Switchable +48V phantom power is available on the XLR and turns off automatically when a 1/4 inch plug is connected. The front panel also has signal/clip LEDs for both gain controls, a MUTE button for monitors and headphones, and separate monitor and headphone level knobs. The Volt 1 Gen 2 runs class-compliant on Mac, iPad and iPhone, while Windows uses UA's ASIO driver installed through UA Connect. A second USB-C port accepts 5V power for hosts that cannot supply enough current, and Lightning devices need Apple's Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.
